Passion makes the world go round. It’s what will get you out of bed in the morning as a business owner, with the fuel to work long days and risk more trying to gain success. It’s how you’ll put the work in to learn more about your industry, to develop and innovate, and to give off good, positive, forward-thinking vibes to your customer base.
But as you muddle through the hard work and often the boring technical detail, it’s easy to lose that spark in your eye you may have experienced at the start. This is to be expected. Running a business is no longer a novel thing but a practical reality you have to manage daily. Just as a brand new marriage doesn’t last in the honeymoon stage forever, but that allows a deeper love and practical friendship to bloom.
However, just like in a marriage, sometimes you need to add some zest and fun to your connection once more. So how can you reignite passion in your industry if you’ve been down in the productivity trenches for too long? Let’s consider that, below:
Get Involved In The Craft & Artistry Again
It’s a tale as old as time – the practitioner of a given field becomes successful and manages his/her own enterprise, settling into a managerial role and they implement the vision. Sometimes, you just want to return to your craft. So why don’t you for a little while?
Reconnecting with the craft that got you started can help rekindle that energy – even if it’s just the restaurant owner helping the head chef for a few services. This doesn’t mean upending the business model or micromanaging employees, but setting aside time to get back into the creative process and remembering why you loved it to begin with.
Experience & Enjoy Your Competitors
Taking the time to experience what your competitors are doing well can help reinvigorate your own approach. After all, competitors don’t have to be enemies, you can learn from and appreciate them. Samsung makes Apple’s phone screens, despite being one of their main competitors, after all.
This could mean attending industry events, visiting competitor stores or websites, and engaging with what they’re offering without the pressure of rivalry. Maybe you’ll notice a new process they’ve implemented such as HIPAA compliant payment processing that’s more seamless than the system you use, and you can learn from that. To reuse the restaurant owner example, perhaps you could go and eat more and fall in love with food again, not just the practice of running an establishment.
Track The History & Progress So Far
It’s good to look back once in a while. Revisiting your history can bring a sense of accomplishment and give you that perspective you were most looking for. It’s easy to forget how much progress has been made when you’re immersed in the tiny details, so reviewing old business plans, looking at past product designs, or even revisiting photos from your early days can help you reconnect with the passion that drove you initially and help that sense of pride. Who cares if you’re being nostalgic? Sometimes that’s a healthy thing.
With this advice, we hope you can more easily ignite your passion in the industry once more, no matter what field you operate in.
